Trinidad and Tobago cyclists created history at the recently concluded 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, winning two gold medals, Men’s team sprint, Men’s sprint (Nicholas Paul) and two silver; Men’s sprint (Phillip Njisane) and Women’s individual Time Trial (Teniel Campbell). Paul became Trinidad and Tobago’s first Pan American sprint champion in 48 years to win two gold medals, while also winning gold alongside Phillip and Keron Bramble in the team sprint.
He broke Phillip’s Pan Am spring record (9.997 seconds) in the individual race, gunning it in in 9.808 seconds.
Campbell became the first T&T woman to win a medal at the 2019 Pan Am Games taking silver in the Women’s Individual time-trial road event on the San Miguel circuit.
The 2018 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games Women’s road race champion also became the first female cyclist from Trinidad and Tobago from Team TTO to ever win a medal at a Pan Am Games.
T&T’s medal haul were 13 (two gold in cycling), eight silver -four in athletics, two in road cycling, one in track cycling, one in rowing, and three bronze- in boxing, swimming and athletics- which is a Pan Am record haul. T&T previous best was eight in 2015.
