Trinidad and Tobago athletes grabbed 30 medals — nine gold, which equaled its best tally ever of eight silver and 13 bronze at the recent Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Barranquilla, Colombia which ended last week,
Included in the record gold medal hauls are three gold medals for USA-based swimmer Dylan Carter, three for cyclist Nicholas Pail, two of which were individual, a first ever in women’s cycling for Teneil Campbell, a third straight for shot-putter Cleoptra Borel and a second gold and bronze for javelin thrower, Keshon Walcott.
Four years ago at the 22nd CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago ended in tenth spot with 11 medals, two gold, one silver and eight bronze from 197 athletes.
The medal tally was the smallest return for Trinidad and Tobago since 1990 in Mexico Trinidad and Tobago managed 13 medals, five silver and eight bronze.
In 2010 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago captured its biggest ever medal, 34 (nine gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze) for the eight spot on the medal table, while in Colombia (2006) Trinidad and Tobago won 21 medals (four gold, nine silver and 11 bronze).
T&T has won a total of 230 medals in the history of the CAC games, 50 gold, 83 silver and l06 bronze to be the second-ranked English-speaking Caribbean country behind Jamaica’s 367 medal haul — 113 gold, 212 silver and 133 bronze.
This year Trinidad and Tobago finished ninth behind Jamaica which won 12 gold medals, four silver and 11 bronze. Mexico topped the list with 132 gold, 118 silver and 91 bronze.
