Travel app hopes to encourage tourism to Grenada

Next stop — Grenada!

That is what one innovator wants your next travel list to sound like, with the release of a new mobile app for locals and travelers heading to Grenada.

“The idea came from my experiences,” said Nigel S. Jones creator of the app PromoGrenada. “To keep up with current affairs, you had to wait until you were at a PC or visit multiple websites to find information. PromoGrenada is appealingly organized and conveniently available in the palm of your hand.”

Jones says the mission of PromoGrenada is to help Grenadians and travelers, especially the diaspora community, with finding local businesses and landmarks in the country. The comprehensive app will provide people with the hottest locations to go to, and will also service users on where to eat, party, and where they can buy from local vendors. Jones wants the app to be something Grenadians rely on, especially in regards to smaller islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique which are part of the country.

“They should get more attention. Lately, they’ve have been including them much more since I left,” said Jones. “But I would love to lobby — I think a lot of non-Grenadian people are not aware of these two small islands.”

Jones says he is no tech maven or tourist guru but upon discovering that Grenada was lacking with an app geared towards them, and how the island is generally underrepresented, he created PromoGrenada.

“I developed an app for myself and saw the response to it – I saw the need for such an app for Grenada,” said Jones.

The app launched two months ago, and is a travel app as much as it is an informative one. Users can search for news, radio stations, photo galleries, promote their businesses, and even search obituaries.

With the intention of bringing together the Grenadian community in Grenada and Grenadians abroad, it already as many fans.

“The response has been phenomenal, especially from Caribbean people — the downloads are tremendous,” said Jones.

The Canada-based creator lived in New York City for 20 years, basing his travel experiences as the foundation for the app. Jones holds the app is dear to his heart, and foresees an ambitious future with PromoGrenada.

“The creation and design of this app has helped me to learn so many new things about Grenada,” said Jones. “In the next three years, I would like to see PromoGrenada being able to support nonprofit organizations in fundraising ventures from the diaspora.”

The app is available for download at the App Store, and the Google Play Store.
