Stowaway from Jamaica found on ship in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A stowaway from Jamaica has been arrested after authorities found him with nearly four pounds of marijuana on an inbound cargo ship at the Port of Tampa.

A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office statement says 23-year-old Duwayne C. Hines boarded the maritime cargo vessel Dinkeldiep while in a Jamaican port without permission. He was discovered on Sunday.

The ship’s crew notified authorities after they found the Jamaican national hiding while at sea. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials were waiting at the docks when the ship arrived.

Deputies helped federal agents charge Hines with felony possession of marijuana, and an immigration hold was issued by customs officials.

Hines is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney.
