Brooklyn Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene, in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance and the Kensington Dog Run Association, joined colleagues and dog owners for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kensington Dog Run, a project made possible through his funding.

Eugene, who represents the 40th Council District in Brooklyn, said on Tuesday that the 7,000-square foot, fenced-in play space, located at the Parade Grounds across from Kermit Place, “will accommodate dogs all of sizes.”

He also said the play space will provide “a safe recreational area for pets, including a new synthetic grass designed to be softer on tender paws.”

“This is a wonderful day, and I can’t describe how excited I am to be here with you,” Eugene said. “For someone who was born on a beautiful island, I used to have a lot of dogs in my house, and a lot of animals in general, and this brings back good memories.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank all of the partners here today, because this would not be possible without them,” added the Haitian-born legislator. “This is an example of what we can do when we work as a team.

“We can make our parks the most beautiful and attractive places to visit for everybody, including our dogs,” Eugene continued. I want to take the opportunity to thank our great partners, including our Commissioner Martin Maher, Prospect Park Alliance President Sue Donoghue, as well as Borough President Eric Adams and Council Member Brad Lander.

“Together we have been able to make so many changes to improve Prospect Park,” he said. I also want to commend the workers who are here, along with the engineers, and those people who designed this wonderful dog park, they also deserve a very special thank you.”

Eugene also commended The Kensington Dog Run Association, “because they advocated for this project to happen; and, through their hard work and advocacy, it has become a reality for the community.”
