Brooklyn Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene on Saturday attended the Cortelyou Library Summer Reading kick-off event, where he presented the Friends of Cortelyou Library with a check for $350,000 “to recognize their winning proposal as part of the Participatory Budgeting Project in District 40.”

Proposed by resident Laurie Davidson, Eugene said the funding will go towards a renovated outdoor plaza and American Disabilities Association (ADA)-accessible entrance, as well as the addition of an external water fountain.

Eugene noted that Participatory Budgeting is a process in which “residents submit community improvement ideas that are voted on to receive City Council funding.”

“It is an honor to join you today for this wonderful event,” said Eugene on Saturday. “Life is a long process of learning, and I am so grateful to all of the wonderful people who work every single day to make our library a welcoming place for our parents and children.

“I want to acknowledge the leadership of the library, Ms. Antonia Bramble,” he added. “We are grateful to all of the staff, because the library wouldn’t be what it is today without all of you.

“There are also people who are here who not staff, but they are volunteers, and they are great citizens who are also working to make our library great,” Eugene continued.”

He thanked Davidson, “who is a dedicated public servant who proposed this project for Participatory Budgeting.

“Because of her dedication and vision, I am here to announce that we are going to have a wonderful renovation of the library,” Eugene said. “We are going to update outdoor plaza, add handicapped accessible doors and an external water foundation, so that our young people can have access to water in the summer.”
