Call for new plays by Caribbean-American female writers

The Queens-based Conch Shell Productions has called for submissions of new plays by Caribbean-American female writers for its production, “Hear Her Call,” a Caribbean-American Women’s Theater Festival.

Conch Shell Productions said on Sunday that it will collaborate with the Milton G. Bassin Performing Arts Center at York College in Jamaica, Queens, for the festival’s March 4-7. 2020 production.

“The festival is a celebration of the unique voices of Caribbean American female playwrights and writers from across the nation,” said producer Magaly Colimon-Christopher on Sunday, Dec.1. “At Conch Shell Productions, our mission is to develop, workshop and produce new plays by American playwrights/storytellers of Caribbean heritage who have an expanded view of reality. We believe art can and should provoke social change.”

She said “Hear Her Call” is a festival of Caribbean American women’s “unique and creative strategies to realize their hopes and dreams, overcome adversity and challenges, and / or challengen/nalter the status quo.”

“Our festival will create an opportunity for diverse audiences to explore and celebrate the unique ethnic/cultural diversity of women whose ancestors or who they themselves immigrated to the Americas from any of the 28 multi-lingual Caribbean cultures,” she said.

Colimon-Christopher said Conch Shell Productions is accepting submissions of Caribbean American female artist-produced, innovative one-act plays; exciting new full-length play readings, readings; “as well auditions tapes from thought-provoking poets, storytellers and hip hop artists to be featured in our first-ever Hear Her Call Slam event.”

She said the deadline for submissions is Dec. 31, 2019 at 11:59 pm. Finalists will be notified by Jan. 15, 2020.

The performance will be held at the Milton G. Bassin Performing Arts Center at York College, 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., Jamaica, New York 11451.

Colimon-Christopher said “Hear Her Call 2020” will close with an award ceremony on Saturday, March 7, 2020.
