Former West Indies batsman Alvin Kallicharan has been named on a list of 1000 people who will receive awards from Queen Elizabeth II.
A total of 1,148 people have been recognized on the Queen’s New Year’s honors list, to become Members of the Most Excellence Order of the British Member (MBEs), Offices of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBEs), Knights, and Dames.
Kallicharan has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Cricket and to Charity.
The BEM was established in 1922 to replace the Medal of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
The 69-year-old former cricketer from Guyana played from 1972 to 1981 as a left-handed batsman and right-arm off spinner.
The former batsman was part of the 1975 and 1979 teams that won the Cricket World Cup. His highest score is 187 against India in the 1978-79 tour.
He took over the captaincy of the West Indies team from 1977-1978 following the resignation of Clive Lloyd, three years prior to his last Test Match and ODI appearances in 1981.
Kallicharan was also named Wisden Cricket of the Year in 1973.
The former cricketer currently resides in North Carolina, United States of America.
