Barbados Tridents Football Team went to Guyana and pulled off a 2-2 draw last week in a Nations League qualifying phase fixture that left both sides with one point each.
Following a goalless first half in the game played at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, Guyana, the Guyanese netted one early in the second 45 minutes of regulation play, but the Bajans bounced back with two of their own, only to be dismayed as the home side answered with another goal to see the match end level.
Though the Tridents did not lose ground in this qualifier match-up of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football Nations League Cup, the Bajans must feel less than satisfied because the Guyanese stand at 182 in the FIFA rankings, way below Barbados’ position of 160.
But do not tell this to the Tridents Technical Director Ahmed Mohammed who was upbeat while muttering complaints about playing conditions.
“All in all it was very good, the boys did very well even though we conceded due to a lack in concentration. The game was decided by the state of the pitch which they were more accustomed to as the home side,” he said in a post-game briefing.
“The performance was okay, but we didn’t play the way we wanted to play because the outfield was not in a good condition to play our technical game,” he added in complaining about the South American field.
Mohammed will need to lift his players’ psyche above grumbles about playing conditions because the next fixture for the Bajans will place them in El Salvador on Oct. 13, playing under Central American in the city of San Salvador.
