Brooklyn Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene recently hosted the “Working for Council District 40 Town Hall” with Mayor Bill de Blasio at Public School 6 in Brooklyn.

Eugene said the event, the second in two years to be held in District 40, was “an opportunity for residents to ask the Mayor questions on issues such as affordable housing, education, protecting students, and mental health awareness.”

It also gave Mayor de Blasio and Eugene a forum to highlight the success of initiatives such as Pre-K For All and Right To Counsel legislation that will provide a long term benefit for members of the community and their families, according to a Eugene statement.

“Thank you to everyone who came out this evening to be here with our Mayor, an outstanding citizen and leader,” said Eugene at the town hall meeting. “I want to welcome everyone, not only on behalf of my district and our valued constituents, but I want to thank each and every one of you for what you do on behalf of the community.

“When I look at the audience, I see so many leaders who work every day to empower this community, because it belongs to all of us,” Eugene added.

“The mayor has been doing everything possible to improve the quality of life of New Yorkers, but we know that his efforts would not be possible without the contributions of so many of you here,” he continued. “And, for that, I thank you so very much. It will take all of us working together with him to improve the quality of life in New York city.”

Eugene said the town hall focused on affordable housing for both low-income residents and members of the elderly community, as well as increased enrollment and funding for educational initiatives for youth.

It also highlighted the resources available to protect the rights of New York’s growing immigrant population, Eugene said.

“The mayor understands clearly that the greatness of New York City comes from its diversity,” he said. “I’ve had the privilege to travel all around the world, and I’m telling you, honestly, this is the best city.”
