Led by a powerful 84 by Evin Lewis, the West Indies on Monday put the Netherlands to the sword by clinching the top spot in their group Qualifying Round in the International Cricket Council (ICC) 50-Over Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Under the Duckworth–Lewis method, because of rain interruption, the West Indies beat the Netherlands by 54 runs after amassing 309-6.

The Netherlands’ loss put them out of contention in the Super Six stage of the tournament.

The Netherlands, who were required to make 222 in the revised target, could only muster 167-6.

A series of run-outs undid the Netherlands, who seemed coasting to victory, thanks to a third wicket stand of 113 by Wesley Barresi (64) and Ryan ten Doeschate (67 not out). After three run-outs, the Netherlands fizzled.

Earlier, Lewis and Chris Gayle gave the West Indies a start they had been looking for in the tournament by blasting 85 for the first wicket.

Gayle held out for 46, just off 31 balls, attempting to go over the top, and Lewis finally succumbed for 84 to a splendid catch at backward point.

In another exhibition of masterful stroke play, Rovman Powell — who, in the earlier match against Ireland, scored his first century on tour — blasted 52 off 38 balls, in ensuring that the West Indies surpassed the 300-mark.

In seeking form, Marlon Samuels was left undefeated on 73 off 84 balls.

Scores: West Indies 309- 6 (Lewis 84, Samuels 73*, Powell 52); Netherlands 167- 6 (Ten Doeschate 67, Barresi 64) in the D/L method
