Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Dave Cameron said Caribbean coaches will get the first choice when it comes to selecting the next head coach of the West Indies team.

The CWI president said the board will give regional coaches the first choice of being appointed when it comes to filling the position of head coach of the Windies team.

He was speaking to reporters in St. Lucia at the end of the semi-finals of the ICC Women World Cup Twenty20 tournament recently.

Cameron said CWI will soon embark on a program of screening and if any of the regional candidates can fill the requirements for the role, they will get the position.

While assuring, a local will get the position of head coach, Cameron said people have to understand that being a head coach of the West Indies team is a management of the players properly. Whoever is in charge will have to understand that they need to be in charge and take the team along a certain path to success.

“They must ensure that the players are not allowed to be bigger than the game. No one us must think we are bigger than the game. We have to serve the game in the best interest of the West Indies and the West Indian people. If the regional candidates cannot fit our requirements then and only then, we will look at bringing someone from outside,” he said.

The West Indies team is without a head coach at the moment because Australian Stuart Law has resigned to take up a position with English County Middlesex team.

At the moment South African Nic Pothas, who has been part of the coaching staff has taken over as the interim head coach for the current Bangladesh series.

Cameron said the board will soon start the search for a coach as the team heads into the World Cup in England next May.
