Guyana gov’t presents Walter Rodney report to AG

The Guyana government has handed over a copy of the report of a Commission of Enquiry (COE) into the death of noted historian and political scientist Dr. Walter Rodney to Attorney General Basil Williams to be laid in Parliament.

Williams has given the report to the Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Barton Scotland.

In February, the government said the presentation of the report was delayed because the ink used to print the document had finished.

In a brief statement, the Ministry of the Presidency said, “Commissioner of the Walter Rodney Commission of Enquiry, Sir Richards Chelteham, did not submit the COE Report to the President David Granger, as was scheduled.”

The previous PPP / Civic government had set up the commission in February 2014, to enquire into what led and who was responsible for the bomb blast that killed Rodney in June 13, 1990.

It was chaired by Barbadian jurist Sir Richards Cheltenham, which cost the state Guy$400 million.

President Granger has dismissed the report, in which certain persons were named during the hearing, as being deeply flawed, noting that the commission had depended largely on hearsay evidence in their determination that the Forbes Burnham-led PNC government was responsible for Rodney’s death.
