Brooklyn-born Major Sharon Sweeting-Lindsey is of Barbadian heritage.

The major retired from the United States Army Reserve having served 26 years. Stationed at Fort Totten and Fort Hamilton, her military occupation skill during her tenure was that of a food service specialist and food service officer.

Major Sweeting-Lindsey graduated from Brooklyn College, where she obtained a Bachelors of Arts Degree, a Masters of Education Degree and an Advanced Certificate Degree in Supervision and Administration. She also possesses numerous licenses as a NYC certified food service instructor, principal and school district administrator.

“I chose nutrition education and food service because I loved to cook and prepare food in my grandmother’s kitchen,” she says.

“In school, I learned the importance of healthy eating practices and how all the four major diseases were directly related to food intake.” The major has 42 years as a food specialist.

In civilian life, Major Sweeting-Lindsey has administered a statewide food and nutrition program and has taught for the Board of Education and for the last 29 years as an adjunct professor at LaGuardia Community College.

A registered, certified and licensed dietitian in New York and Texas with a love of health and nutrition, she founded Taurus Associates Inc., a nutritional food service provider and consultant agency.

Major Sweeting-Lindsey co-founded the Locust Manor Veterans Committee to address the un-met needs of veterans currently domiciled in the facility.

She also founded V.E.T.S Inc., a non-profit organization that opened a 10-bed residential facility, Honor House Veterans Residence, for former displaced veterans. Major Sweeting-Lindsey is the executive director.

The major credits her mom, Dolores Johnson, as the most influential person in her life.
