Basketball is a sport followed by all types of athletes whether they be by the young or old. The fans, competitors, and/or the staff personnel whether they reside in the met tri- state area or in various parts of the United States, Caribbean, Canada or even overseas compete in this activity in it on some level.
The way the professionals play the game-except at times by the Knicks and/or the Nets- excite the fan with their moves on the court. Injuries to key personnel at times keep their respective teams out of contention for a championship or maybe even a contender for top honors.
On the local side forget about the National Basketball Association, for now; there’s the college or high school game, led by St. John’s, Iona, St. Francis of Brooklyn, and Seton Hall, that draws spectators out to cheer them on. And then there’s Lincoln and Boys and Girls of Brooklyn, Christ The King of Queens, and Cardinal Hayes of The Bronx.
One can’t forget, an NCAA Division III college Vaughn College of Queens who uses the ElmCor Center in nearby Queens, as their home court.
The way Vaughn played against The New School of Manhattan, the former could produce a College All-American out of Division III and maybe even a player in the National Basketball Association in due time during their hoop career. As a team, Vaughn is averaging about 80 points a game.
While everything seemed to go wrong with the New School both on offense as well as on defense, Vaughn opened the start of the game by scoring 10 straight points, capitalized on their opponent’s turn overs, and ran up the margin to eventually a half time score of 56-26 and the final count of 99-54. Scoring high is nothing new for Vaughn.
“The work that we put in off the court, the discipline, of staying focused with the game plan, and our defense and the guards get us going have been the reasons for our success,” said assistant coach Omari Wright, “If we box out and rebound, we’d be able to beat any body. If we step out and rebound, we’ll be able to beat anybody on way given on any day.”
“As of late, we found our identity,” added Wright. “We’re a team of great guards. Our guards really get us going. If we hold opponents on the end on the defensive, I think that we’ll be a pretty good team.”
Vaughan’s defense proved to be strong all season. and held opponents down to 50 points a game. These are some of the highlights of the season and made Vaughn a successful team.
“Playing at ElmCor is a great facility and the officials of ElmCor welcome Vaughn to its site for the home games and having a season.
Vaughn College held one home game at the Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA.
“It was a great experience playing at the Barclays Center,” said Coach Wright. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience that the kids (players) will definitely remember.”
