Caribbean hotels unite for Dominica, raises US$51,000

The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) and the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA) recently spearheaded “Caribbean Hotels Unite for Dominica,” a joint fundraising initiative and online auction, raising US$51,000 in an effort to bring financial aid to the people of Dominica.

In August, Tropical Storm Erika unleashed 12 inches of rain on the island causing extensive flooding, loss of life and more than US$200 million in damage.

“Caribbean Hotels Unite for Dominica,” conceived by CHTA acting president and president-elect Karolin Troubetzkoy, featured 57 Caribbean vacation packages on charitybuzz.com, an online charity auction platform with a global reach of 125,000-plus registered bidders in 109 countries.

CHTA said the just-completed auction raised more than US$51,000, which was deposited into a designated DHTA account.

The funds will be distributed in Dominica under guidelines created by a joint CHTA/DHTA committee, CHTA said.

“It was both humbling and heart-warming to see how quickly and enthusiastically Caribbean hoteliers responded to this assistance campaign further reiterating we are, in-fact, one Caribbean, and can rely on each other in times of need,” said Troubetzkoy.

CHTA is a federation of 32 national hotel associations, with more than 600 member hotels and more than 300 allied members.

CHTA said it is the largest representative of the private sector in the Caribbean hotel and tourism industry.

“We are the voice of the Caribbean hospitality industry for the development of the region in the highly competitive and sophisticated environment of international tourism,” said CHTA in a statement.
