The range of activities planned for the 86th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spans a myriad of events from theatrical productions, concert performances, breakfast tributes in the nation’s capital and a national commemoration urging Americans to “Be Like King.”
The annual birthday commemorative marking the national holiday known as MLK Day starts on his actual Jan. 15 birth date and heightens on Monday, when numerous activities hail the Civil Rights leader.
The play, “The Meeting,” kicks off the historic celebration at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 at the Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts at LIU – One University Plaza, on Flatbush Ave. between Dekalb & Willoughby St.
Presented by Shades of Truth Theater and New Heritage Theater Group in association with the Kumble Theater, the two-man play depicts a fictional account of a meeting between Dr. King and Malcolm X, two men described “with different ideologies, but a common understanding of the plight of Black America.”

Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (CACCI) will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when business and community leaders along with elected officials join with CACCI members during their annual small business leadership power breakfast on Jan. 16.
Slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Brooklyn Borough Hall, the theme for this year’s Annual Tribute to Dr. King is: Celebrating and continuing the legacy of Dr. King.
“At this time of year we reflect on the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remembering his contributions, how he worked tirelessly with others to change the conscience of America and the world,” Grenadian national Roy Hastick, president of CACCI said.
“As we pay tribute to Dr. King we are mindful of the reality that because of the rich history of the civil rights movement and the support which CACCI has received we have been able to survive 30 years, still strong and planning for the future,” Hastick added.

Jan. 18, Manhattan club spot, SOBs will celebrate their 13th annual MLK Day with a performance from singer-songwriter, poet and actor Saul Williams. He will take the reins of an annual ceremony marking the legacy left by Dr. King.
Previously hosted by poet Gil Scott Heron, this year’s ceremony will be dedicated to the memory of the iconic poet.

Perhaps the most vociferous call to action is being made by Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network’s (NAN) to “Be Like King.”
Together they plan to honor the Nobel Laureate with a series of events on Jan. 19, the official holiday. Their annual breakfast in the nation’s capital of Washington D.C. begins at 8:30 a.m. and combines with an annual standing room only public policy forum in Harlem to promote the work of Dr. King.
