The newly formed American-Caribbean Theatre Alliance, Inc. (ACTA) will present its inaugural production of “Uncle Joe’s Patty Shop” at the Springfield Gardens Church of Christ (144-04 Farmers Blvd., Springfield Gardens, NY 11434) on Aug. 21, 22, & 23 at 7:00 p.m., and Aug. 24 at 5:00 p.m. All shows are free and open to the public.
Joe Gladstone is the owner of the famous Uncle Joe’s Patty Shop. It’s just another day at the patty shop until a foreigner comes and rattles up everyone! “Uncle Joe’s Patty Shop” contains relateable characters: “The get rich quick” scheming father, the young adventurous son, the out spoken wife, the lovable soon to be daughter-in-law and the stranger who turns everyone’s world upside down. “Uncle Joe’s Patty Shop” is a Jamaican comedy for the whole family.
The ACTA is a new theatre company founded by stage designer Harlan Penn dedicated to presenting theatre of the Caribbean diaspora. Future productions will include Trevor Rhone’s “Two Can Play” (November 2014) and “Sanco: A Guyanese Murder Mystery” by H. Duane (April 2015).
“By having a background in theatrical design, I feel that I can bring the highest quality of professionalism to productions presented by the ACTA. The Caribbean and theatre have a long history together; companies such as the Theater Guild of Guyana, Trinidad Theatre Workshop, and Kingston, Jamaica’s Little Theatre origins can be traced back to the 1950s. In addition, evidence of live theatre being performed in the Caribbean can be traced back to the days of British colonialism,” says founder Harlan Penn.
