Highlighting its theme ‘In Service to the Community” President of the Guyana Action Committee (GAC) Errol Lewis, challenged members and patrons to give back, and used the words of former president, John F Kennedy – “ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country” as a call to action.
Thanking the elegantly dressed audience for coming out to support the organization’s recent 3rd Annual Awards ceremony and Black Tie Affair, Lewis expressed happiness at GAC’s track record of empowering Guyanese at home and abroad, through cultural economic and social programs.
The programs that are far reaching in scope encouraged Lewis’ call for other groups to join GAC in an effort to help the outfit to successfully carry out its mission.
Dedicated and focused on excellence, the group presented five community leaders with plaques. They included prodigy, Nickeitta Caraline Leung, youth and economic development program coordinator at Pratt Area Community Council. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a BA Degree in both Political Science and Women’s Studies. She is also an aspiring lawyer.
Ivelaw L. Griffith, PhD, recently appointed president of Fort Valley State University in Georgia and former professor of political science, provost and senior VP of York College of The City University of New York, Founder, President of Daniels Financial Services, Reginald Daniels, Educator, retired NYC Community School District Superintendant, Dr. Walter Kyte, and retired educator, community activist Veronica Ralph-Munro, also received plaques.
Cultural Affairs Liaison Pablo M. Romano of Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr’s Office presented the honorees with citations, while U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke sent proclamations to the applaud the high achievers.
The Action Committee was also honored with a citation for its community outreach.
The hugs, handshakes and laughter that punctuated the evening’s celebration at Occasions Banquet Hall, in Springfield Gardens showed camaraderie. And with able emcee Carlyle Harry, a longtime politician and community activist at the helm, the audience was no doubt entertained, as goals were met.
Future programs of GAC will target vulnerable men who will benefit from foundational academics (mathematics and English) social skills development and emotional support, medical evaluation, sports health, among others.
