Ramnaresh Sarwan was named as one of the six captains of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League franchises yesterday, and the experienced West Indies batsman is “honored” by his selection. Sarwan will lead the Guyana Amazon Warriors into battle in the CPL, which bowls off on July 30, with the first match pitting Barbados Tridents against St. Lucia Zouks.

The other players selected as captains are all West Indies regulars.

West Indies One-Day International skipper Dwayne Bravo will lead the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, while the Zouks will have Bravo’s predecessor Darren Sammy at the helm.

Kieron Pollard (Tridents), Chris Gayle (Jamaica Tallawahs) and Marlon Samuels (Antigua Hawks – bills) are the other captains named for the CPL. Only Samuels has not skippered West Indies before, while Kieron Pollard made his debut on Sunday after an injured Bravo did not play.

According to a CPL release yesterday, Sarwan was pleased to be chosen to head the team. “It is a great honor to have chosen to captain the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first ever Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament,” Sarwan was quoted as saying. “I have the opportunity to work with and lead some of the best players in the region and the world, and I am looking forward to using my years of experience to guide the Amazon Warriors to victory.”
