On Saturday, March 30, 2013, Council Member Leroy Comrie, with The Allan Houston Legacy Foundation, and Jay Sugarman, founder of the iStar Family Shootout, hosted the “Father Knows Best Tour” at the Queens College Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
In its work to strengthen ties between fathers and their families, The Allan Houston Legacy Foundation has been hosting basketball clinics across the city, as a bonding experience, to help encourage fathers to be a part of their children’s lives.
Council Member Leroy Comrie: “Sports activities are not only a way for people to stay physically fit, but they also serve as a great bonding tool between father and child. Events like the iStar Charity Shootout not only helps build this relationship, but also show how important it is for fathers to be with and care for their families. Participating in sports can allow young people to develop character, sportsmanship, and leadership skills. I would like to thank the Allan Houston Legacy Foundation and Jay Sugarman, as well as all the participants, for supporting the community and holding this event in Queens.”
“Roughly one third of children in New York City live in a fatherless home. We have the opportunity to go to the source of the problem and help provide the tools needed to improve communication and support better family relationships,” stated Allan Houston, former NBA All-Star for the Knicks, now the team’s assistant general manager. “We had a tremendous turn out throughout the tour and I am grateful to iStar Financial, Queens College and everyone who made our final stop such a success.”
Allan Houston and Council Member Leroy Comrie, spoke to the more than 200 participants on Saturday on the importance of a strong family and raising a child. The clinic was an opportunity for fathers and their children to bond, while participating in basketball drills that were lead by Houston.
