Jonathan Severe, who paced Christ The King High School to an incredible season in the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association, heads the roster for the City team, that will oppose the Suburban team in the 5:30 p.m. New York Regional game of the Jordan Brand Classic at Barclays Center on Saturday, April 13.
This venue, the home of the Brooklyn Nets franchise in the National Basketball Association, will host three all-star contests pitting the cream of the crop of schoolboy players in the nation. There will also be a game of international players. Some of these cagers expect to be the stars of tomorrow both in the college and pro ranks.
Severe earned many honors, led the Royals from Middle Village, New York in scoring, has many college offers but still has to make up his mind where he wants to go to continue his basketball and academic career. He is only one of two players from the CHSAA of New York City to land a spot in the Jordan Classic that is expected to draw a large crowd and plenty of recruiters from the college ranks.
Other New York City players to go to the Barclays Center court include Jaquan Lynch, who helped to pace Brooklyn’s Thomas Jefferson, to runner-up position to Lincoln in the Public Schools Athletic League finals and is headed for Florida International college, South Shore’s Terrance Samuels, who will play at UConn, teammate Shamick Sheppard, who will head for Towson and Curtis’ Hasson Martin, who is Rhode Island College bound.
Long Island’s Ken Facey, who starred at Long Island Lutheran this past season, and is headed for UConn, Chinonso Obokoh who played his high school ball at Bishop Kearney and signed with Syracuse, Shane Rector (South Kent, Rutgers), Brewster Academy’s Kyle Washington (North Carolina State) and Rich Williams(Vermont Academy, Hofstra complete the roster.
The Suburban Roster is made up of DeAndre Bemery, of Patrick School and is headed for St. Joseph’s College, Reggie Cameron (Hudson Catholic, Georgetown), Austin Colbert (Jil Bernard, Illinois), Jposh Jane (Archbishop Stepinac, Monmouth), Davon Reed (Princeton Day, Miami), Tyler Roberson (Roselle Catholic, Syracuse), Jaren Sinc (St. Bernard, Northwestern), Dajahon Smith (Putman Science Academy, Dayton), Manny Suarez (Marist, Fordham) and Michael Young (St. Benedict’s, Pittsburg).
The feature game of the 12th annual Jordan Brand Classic, matches the East against the West teams with the players chosen by a committee of Jordan Brand, a division of Nike.
Andrew Wiggins from Huntington Prep in West Virginia, Julius Randle from Prestonwood Christian Academy in Dallas, Texas both playing for the East squad, and Aaron Gordon from Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose in California, competing for the West team are all undecided abount their next level of competition.
Kentucky will be getting four of the players from the main attraction-Aaron Harrison of Fort Bend in Texas, his high school teammate Andrew Harrison, Dakari Johnson, from Montverde in Florida, and Marcus Lee from Deer Valley High in California, and James Young from Rochester, Michigan.
Kansas will land come September seniors Wayne Selden from New Hampshire, Joel Embid of Florida. The University of Florida will get Kasey Hill, who will be remaining in his home state, and Chris Walker, who likewise will remain in his native state.
And the list goes!
The Jordan Brand Classic will get the festivities off with an international game starting at 3:30 p.m.
The triple-header should draw a large crowd, especially from students of the nearby competing schools, parents of the players, and recruiters who will have their focus on the ‘undecided’ players.
