OLYMPIC BOUND

Just off a big win, clocking in at a record 52.10 sec in the 400m and 23.64 in the 200m at the USATF Club Championships in Omaha, Nabraska, and capturing the “Most Outstanding Female” award, Guyana’s winningest track and field star, Aliann Pompey, is on her way to England to compete in the upcoming London games.

Thirty-four year old Pompey has had a stellar career in track and field. The athlete clocked in a 52.3 at the 2011 Penn Relays and 51.95 in the 400m race at the N.J. International Track and Field Meet.

Pompey also qualified four times at the Central American and Caribbean Games and reached the finals at the Commonwealth Games, in Delhi India in 2010.

For over 10 years, the Manhattan College graduate has been flying Guyana’s flag high, claiming numerous titles in both outdoor and indoor events. Her personal best in the 400m is 50.93, which she recorded in 2004 at the Commonwealth Games.

Aliann has participated in the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics. It is hoped that this committed sportswoman can once again make Guyana proud by bringing home the gold.

Meanwhile, Guyanese 17-year-old Kadecia Baird who recorded the fastest 400-meter time for a high school runner in the U.S. last month,participated in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, where she ran for Guyana during the July 10-15 meet.

She registered the fifth-fastest ime in U.S. high school history in the 400 meters at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain, finishing second in 51.04 seconds. Efforts are being made for her to attend the London Olympics as an “observer.”
