As part of their commitment to making a difference in the communities in which they live and work, National Grid employees volunteered for the Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger SuperPantry to help feed families in Brooklyn.
National Grid employees sorted fresh and frozen produce and assisted with food distribution. Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger (BSCAH) helps more than 9,000 families each month with enough food for more than nine nutritious meals.
“With the challenging economy, many people are finding themselves in need for the first time,” said Sonya Johnson, senior counsel in National Grid’s Legal Department and coordinator of the volunteer activity. “This was a great opportunity for our department to volunteer with a local community organization that is making a difference in people’s lives.”
BSCAH, located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, provides food and social services for families in need.
The organization runs New York City’s largest emergency food pantry, super-market style where clients can select fresh fruits, vegetables and other food items. The fresh produce is grown in Victory Garden, BSCAH’s urban farm, which yields thousands of pounds of fresh organic produce.
National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island.
It manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and owns over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation, providing power to over one million LIPA customers. It is the largest distributor of natural gas in northeastern U.S., serving approximately 3.4 million customers in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
