AFUWI to hosts NYC fundraiser

The American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) will host its inaugural Mix & Mingle fundraiser in aid of The Foundation’s Adopt-A-Student for $1-A-Day Drive. The event will be held at the Consulate of Jamaica, New York on Thursday, March 22, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.

The Mix & Mingle event was created to encourage the community to support the University of the West Indies (UWI) and The Foundation while providing a wonderful networking opportunity for attendees.

Sponsors Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill, Grace Foods USA and The Door Restaurant will provide complimentary refreshments, while entertainment will be provided by Tevin Thomas.

One hundred high school scholars who are in need of financial assistance to pursue undergraduate studies at UWI are slated to benefit from this effort. By donating $1 a day, persons would be able to help them with tuition costs and effect change in their lives.

“We are thrilled to be hosting this inaugural event, which will allow AFUWI to fulfill its mandate of providing scholarships to underprivileged students,” said Lowell Hawthorne, chairman of the AFUWI Partnership Board.

“These are bright young people who desire to advance to tertiary education, but are restrained by finances. It is our mission to assist these students in realizing their dreams but we need the unwavering support of the Diaspora community to achieve this goal,” he added.
