With their convincing 4-0 shutout of Globe recently, the #6-ranked Monroe Mustangs men’s soccer team are NJCAA Division I Men’s Region XV Champions for the second consecutive year. This puts the Mustangs into the Northeast District Tournament on Nov. 5-6 which will be hosted by Region XIX.
“I’m very proud of my team,” said Coach Marcus Dibernardo. “We work hard every single day to get better and improve our game so this title is gratifying. But truthfully, it’s only a step in the plans we have. We think we can be as good, if not better, than any team in the nation and we hope to prove it.”
Last year, Monroe won the Region and District titles and finished fourth in the 12-team National Tournament.
This game featured a consistent peppering of the Globe keeper. The first goal was an unassisted goal in the 19th minute by Edir Dagraca. Then All-American Anthony Asante got into the act and put the game away. He scored on a pass from fellow All-American Karamba Janneh in the 30th minute and then again in the 35th minute off an assist by Mamadee Kamara.
In the second half, Sagi Lev-ari banged one in at the 75th minute off a feed from Geofree Saintillien to give Monroe the 4-0 win and the title.
