Montano scores another Road March win

Soca Superstar Machel Montano copped the 2016 Road March with his hit song “Waiting on Stage” — for the third consecutive year. This is the first time that Montano had scored a hat-trick in the Road March competition for T&T Carnival.

His song was played 328 times according to the results released by the National Carnival Commission (NCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

He beat the other favorite Kees Dieffenthaller’s “People,” which was played 29 times, into second position.

This is Montano’s eighth win, having first took the title in 2006, with “Band of the Year,” with Patrice Roberts, and “Jumbie” and then later in 2011 and 2012 with “Advantage” and “Pump your Flag.” He was able to claim back-to-back Road March wins.

In 2014 and 2015 Montano won the Road March titles with his songs “Ministry of Road” and “Like a Boss.”

He has now joined the likes of veteran calypsonians Aldwyn “Lord Kitchener” Roberts (1963-65), Chris “Tambu” Herbert (1998-1999) and Austin “Super Blue” Lyons (1991-1993).

Raphael “Roaring Lion” De Leon is the only person to claim four Road March titles in four consecutive years.

Montano has so far won four Road March titles in the last five years and now this is his sixth win.

Band of the Year title went to Ronnie & Caro’s 2016 presentation “Tears of…” The band also won the Downtown (Port of Spain) Band of the Year title.

It was the first time that Ronnie & Caro won the Band of the Year in the Large Band category.
