Artists come together for free hurricane relief concert

A generous concert for home.

Several Caribbean artists performed at a hurricane relief benefit concert in Queens on Sept. 17.

Headlining the show were soca artists Lyrikal and Kerwin Du Bois, and there were also appearances by other singers and performers. The concert was organized by the Caribbean American Center of New York (CACNY) and the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) to gather well-known entertainers from the region to for an effective fundraiser, said the executive director of CACNY.

“I am personally very humbled to have been a part of this very special effort and proud of CACNY’s board of directors participation in this venture,” said Jean Alexander. “The event was a huge success judging by the packed crowd at the Mazi Night Club.”

Alexander extended her gratitude to all of performers for participated in the impromptu event, and says they all gave a great show for a great need.

“A generous thank you to Lyrikal, Kerwin Du Bois, and the entire team of artists, comedians, and deejays who gave such great performances without pay, and at such short notice to ensure a successful event,” she said. “CACNY and WIADCA are pleased and honored to have partnered with you on such a worthwhile and wonderful event to help those in need after the devastation of Hurricane Irma and now Maria.”

Both organizations will continue to collect supplies in preparation to ship food, hygienic supplies, and other daily necessities to the hard hit areas of throughout the Caribbean. Donations can be made to CACNY’s office at 195 Cadman Plaza W. between Prospect and Middagh streets in Brooklyn, and at WIADCA’s office at 323 Rogers Ave. between Montgomery Street and Sullivan Place, also in Brooklyn.

Lyrikal also noted that the concert was also a success and was thrilled by the strength of encouragement from the attendees, and promised that the assistance is on the way.

“Thank you to everyone that attended, and most of all to all my fans and supporters that had the place energized — the support was beyond real,” said Lyrikal. “We did it for a great cause and for that I want to say thank you again. We some funds heading your way soon.”
