Annual tribute to ancestors of the Middle Passage

On Saturday, June 11, from noon to sun down, The People of the Sun Middle Passage will be holding the “27th Annual Tribute to Our Ancestors of the Middle Passage” at 17th Street and the boardwalk, Coney Island, Brooklyn.

According to the People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College, tribute will be paid to “our ancestors who lost their lives in the Middle Passage and those in our families who are no longer with us now.

The Collective said it will be making special tributes to Prince, Natalie Cole, Maurice White, and Malik Izaak Taylor, also known as Phife Dawg A Tribe Called Quest, as well as to Medgar Evers College Prof. Dr. Mary Umolu.

“We invite you to join us and in the celebrations of music, spoken word, and dance that will take place throughout the day,” the Collective said.

The Tribute will also feature performances by Shanto, Ras Atiba & The Sarabita World Band, among others.

“At the end of the day, we will go down to the water’s edge to place flowers on the water in honor of those lost in the Middle Passage,” the People of the Sun Middle Passage Collective said.
