Tears flowed as Jamaica’s superstar Usain Bolt made his final appearance before his home crowd, winning a special 100 meters event dubbed “Salute to a Legend” at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston last Saturday night (June 10).
Bolt, 30, will end his remarkable career following August’s IAAF World Championships in London in August.
There was also jubilation among the 30,000 fans in an emotional farewell at the National Stadium.
Although Bolt was slowly away from the blocks but found his usual midrace acceleration to pass the early leaders and cross the line in first. Jamaicans Jhevaughn Minize and Nikel Ashmeade followed Bolt across the line.
He celebrated with a lap around the track before striking his trademark “Lightning Bolt” pose much to the delight of his fans.
Bolt said afterwards, “I don’t think I have ever been that nervous to run in the 100 meters. It was nerve-wrecking.”
“I have done all I have done. Being a legend now is something big,” he told reporters.
Bolt is an eight-time Olympic gold medalist and has announced that he will retire from the track after the IAAF World Championship in London.
