Bahamians will go to the polls on May 10, 2017 to elect a new government. Prime Minister Perry Christie made the announcement at the Office of the Prime Minister on April 12, 2017 shortly after Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade, read a proclamation from Governor General Dame Marguerite Pindling dissolving Parliament.
Greenslade also read a second proclamation revealing that Parliament will reconvene on May 24.
In his address, Prime Minister Christie said it is now left to the citizenry of the nation to decide who will fill those seats in the next House of Assembly.
“In doing so, you will also be deciding who will form the government of The Bahamas for the next five years,” he said.
In 2012, Christie led the Progressive Liberal party (PLP) to victory, defeating the then ruling Free National Movement (FNM) for control of the 38-seat House of Assembly. The FNM won nine of the seats.
The Democratic National Alliance also contested the election but failed to win a seat.
The main opposition Free National Movement (FNM) says it is prepared to campaign for the general election; the FNM is expected to be among the three political parties likely to contest the polling.
