Local kids closed out summer showcasing their talents one last time before school starts.
Dozens of kids and families came out to showcase their singing and dancing skills at the Brooklyn Museum for the Stay in School Concert and College Fair on Sept. 3. It was the first time for many guests there who loved the idea of education promoting education, said a local mom whose son sang at the concert.
“It was very nice. It was the first time I attended because my son was invited to sing,” said Vanessa Wong, who watched her son Micah perform a song. “I always knew about it but I never went never made time to go, but this is something I would recommend more people to attend.”
The youth-oriented concert is part of a series of Caribbean-themed events hosted by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) the weekend before the carnival on Labor Day. The event gathers young talent from Brooklyn to celebrate the end of summer and promote the importance of education.
Artists danced, sang, and rapped anti-drug and anti-violence music for a crowd of more than a 100v people. Some handed over some gifts for the kids and shared some history facts, said Wong.
“There was an artist that gave away coloring books of important African-Americans in history,” said Wong. “I was also interested when they spoke of the African-American people, and the history of the black panthers. Most people seemed interested in what they could learn about them.”
Wong says the concert should have been more heavily attended because of the important message artists were sending out.
“I think they need to promote this more,” said Wong. “They should do this in conjunction with the department of education so more people can know.”
