American Friends of Jamaica are counting the days to July 25 when their deadline to raising $25,000 to help students in Jamaica will expire.
Along with Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce AKA Pocket Rocket and her Pocket Rocket Foundation, “the AFJ grabbed the baton and embarked on an amazing philanthropic race” to fundraise for the cause.
“Our goal is to raise $25K for student athletes in Jamaica by July 25,” an AFJ spokesperson said.
In order to make the goal, the AFJ is pleading for donations to fund tuition, books, lunch and travel for a Jamaican youth. Donors who contribute could receive a T-shirt or coffee table book signed by the fastest woman on earth.
As Fraser-Pryce races for a three-peat gold in the 100m at this year’s Rio Olympics, “we hope that you’ll light the torch for a young student and champion the #ShellyAnnGivesBack campaign.”
The Pocket Rocket Foundation was born out of the desire of two-time Olympic 100m gold medalist champion, Fraser-Pryce “to create lasting change in the lives of student-athletes and children in children’s homes across Jamaica by providing academic scholarships and other assistance.”
Founded and named for her moniker, the Pocket Rocket Foundation awards full scholarships to Jamaican students of any sporting discipline. Currently PRF funds 14 students but together with the AFJ they can multiply the number to give many more youths an opportunity to excellence.
As the international community counts down to the Aug. 5 start of the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil the AFJ and the PRF claim “there’s another exciting race happening” and it ends on July 25.
