The Tri-Nation Series started at The Providence Stadium in Guyana with South Africa facing the West Indies. South African captain Abde Villers won the toss and elected to bat.
However, some fine steady bowling from the West Indies bowlers restricted the South Africans from any fast scoring.
After a stubborn knock of 61 runs from 83 balls from RiLee Rossouw and 31 from 49 balls from Abde Villiers, South Africa was bowled out for 188 runs in 46.5 overs.
SUNIL NARINE CAPTURES 6 WICKETS FOR 27 RUNS
Some thrilling bowling from Sunil Narine with some exceptional turn with the ball got the South African batsmen in conjecture. They were doubtful of what to do and Narine dismissed six of them for 27 runs.
Allrounder Carlos Brathwaite got two wickets for 35 runs off 8 overs and pacers Jerome Taylor 1 for 36 and Jason Holder 1 for 37.
WEST INDIES 191 FOR 6 IN 48.1 OVERS
Opening batsman Johnson Charles scored a defiant 31 from 52 balls and a spectacular 67 runs not out from 67 balls from Kieron Pollard.
Pollard is the fourth Caribbean player to hit 100 sixes in One-Day Internationals. The others are Chris Gayle, Brian Lara and Sir Vivian Richards. Man of the match was Sunil Narine.
For South Africa, Aaron Phangiso 3 for 40 from 10 overs and Imran Jahir 2 for 41 from 10 overs were the main wicket takers.
Note: West Indies senior squad continues to have this problem in negotiating how to modify their approach in batting spin. Four top West Indies players went down to spin against South Africa because of a lack of feet movement and leaving big gaps between bat and pad. They are Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo.
