The gorgeous Nuriyyih Gerrard, Miss World Guyana 2016, who arrived in the United States via Fly Jamaica Airways, is currently competing in the preliminary phase at the 66th Miss World Pageant, slated for Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Washington DC.

Gerrard, a 24-year-old psychology student, and Ambassador of Guyana’s rural Patora-Siparuni, Region 8, is among 120 beauties from around the world competing in the pageant that is being held for only the second time in the United States. The first on United States soil was held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1991.

Her beauty with a purpose — Thrive — Mental Wellness — live without stigma — will showcase her “One Act Foundation” that consists of a group of talented young professionals who uses technology to bring awareness to the puzzle around mental health disorders and illness. They are now focused on implementing a successful mental wellness and awareness campaign in collaboration with Ministry of Health and other related NGO’s in Guyana.

So far, Gerrard has competed in the talent competition among other queens, but did not place in this category. However, the talented young woman will vie in the Fashion Fitness, and other Beauty with a Purpose, to boost her scores.

Franchise holder, Natasha Blu Martindale encouraged Nuriyyih to stay consistent, “be herself and stay focused, you will make Guyana proud.”

She added, “I would urge all potential beauties to follow the journey and start preparing even before they apply to compete in any pageant. Representing Guyana is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Using makeup products compliments of Black Opal to look “glam,” and gear from John Lewis Styles Guyana to stay fit, the lovely lady also thanked fashion designer Roger Gary for dressing her in creations, befitting the Miss World competition.

Gary is also the queen’s stylist, and constant advisor on issues of pageantry since he has groomed many pageant contestants for more than 10 years.

“Guyana is now first since the 1960’s considered a “sash factor” at the Miss World, mainly because our last three representatives have done very well,” said Roger Gary.

“Nuriyyih will do well in the other Fast Track programs of the pageant,” added the couturier, who also stated that the girls earn points in the fast track that would take them further in the six other fast track events left to be judged.

“The most important aspect of the Miss World is the “Beauty with a Purpose “ (BWAP) program and I think that Nuriyyih will do well there. She will be highlighting the Mental Health issues in Guyana,” said Gary who added that Guyana won the BWAP in 2014 and had a Top 5 placement last year.

“I am wishing Nuriyyih well. I will be in Washington DC to cheer her on. I know that she will give it her all and do herself and Guyana proud.

In an earlier interview with Caribbean Life, Nuriyyih said she viewed pageants where young woman such as herself, could make a meaningful difference in the world, in their lives, in their community, in society, and in our country.”
