West Indies women cricketers will at long last get an increase in their pay packets starting Oct. 1, 2016.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has reached an agreement with the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) which will see increases in retainer fees, sponsorship payments, match fees and captain’s allowances.

The increase is estimated to cost the WICB around US$600,000 for the upcoming year.

The new compensation package will also benefit an unlimited number of non-retained players.

The WIBC said the number of women on retainer contracts will also increase from 11 to 15.

WICB CEO Michael Murihead said “we are hoping this new package will serve as an additional incentive for the current set of women, but will serve as a drawing card to more women to be attracted to cricket.”

WIPA president Wavell Hinds praised the increase saying “our women senior team has been a solid elite performing group over the last decade, as such, the improvement and security in their compensation package is well deserved. We wish the team well for their upcoming home assignment.”

West Indies women are now in camp for a home-series against England.

The series will consist of five One-Day Internationals, the last three of which will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship, to be contested between Oct. 8 and 19 at the Trelawny Mutliplex and Sabina Park, Jamaica.

A win in the series would give the West Indies a spot in the World Cup in the UK in June next year.

The West Indies team is in second place with 20 points behind Australia, and England which is currently in the third spot.
