As Chair of the City Council’s Housing and Buildings Committee, Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams has applauded State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie for meeting with NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio “to promise that renewing and strengthening the rent regulation laws would be his number one priority.”
“As I said last month, New York state elected officials must meet the affordable housing crisis with absolute urgency before our City’s rent regulations expire this spring,” said Williams, who represents the 45th Council District in Brooklyn.
“In order to ensure that nearly one million New Yorkers do not see their rent go up or their protection against arbitrary evictions lost, Albany must enact stronger tenant protections to further develop the Mayor’s Affordable Housing Plan, which will create and preserve 200,000 affordable housing units within the next 10 years,” he added.
Williams said he was “encouraged that, under the new leadership of Speaker Heastie, Albany will share the same goal to quickly address our city’s chronic housing shortage to ensure that New York becomes a place for all to thrive.
“It is my hope that Speaker Heastie work closely with Mayor de Blasio, Governor Cuomo and State Senate President Skelos to develop a plan that not only complements the mayor’s but gives immediate relief to our poor and working class citizens who need it most,” he said.
Williams’ district in Brooklyn covers Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands, and parts of Midwood and Canarsie.
