Lester Smith, the technical director of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) was charged with five counts of forgery, four counts of possession of forged documents and one count of conspiracy to forge.
He appeared in court last Monday to answer the charges that he along, with basketball coach Nigel McKie, was allegedly involved in a United States visa scam and was granted EC$50,00 bail. They are due to re-appear in court on Dec. 7, 2015.
The officials are being investigated by the US Embassy in Grenada and Barbados for an alleged visa application scam.
Reports are that at least five people are being investigated by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) In Grenada following that they say were irregularities uncovered during some visa applications.
The investigations surround officials from the GFC, The Grenada Olympic Committee and a senior Ministry of Sports official among others.
Two days after the departure of the National Women’s Olympic team for Puerto Rico in August, it is alleged that five persons went to Barbados to apply for visas claiming to be footballers and football officials, who were attempting to go and meet with the team.
Upon further scrutiny, it was discovered that the declarations were false and the letters submitted to the Embassy were false and in some cases had forged signatures.
