Dr. Yvonne McCallum-Peters was born and raised in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member-nation of Guyana.
She has earned a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Dr. McCallum-Peters began her academic duty at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York (CUNY) in the fall semester of 1994.
She worked as a part-time Basic Education/GED instructor in the Continuing Education Department, now known as the Department of External Programs.
In the fall of 1998, Dr. McCallum-Peters became a full-time faculty member of the Post Secondary Readiness Center, now renamed Academic Foundations Division.
She has also been an adjunct faculty member of the English Department since 2000.
Before joining the Medgar Evers College faculty, Dr. McCallum-Peters taught at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY, from 1985 until her full-time appointment at Medgar Evers College.
She has also been an adjunct assistant professor at Brooklyn College, where she continues to teach basic skills in the summer and winter programs.
She is a certified ACT reader and grades entry and exit essays of CUNY freshman students.
In addition, Dr. McCallum-Peters has worked as a Caribbean examiner for both English 1 (English Composition) and English 11 (Literature).
She has taught at various levels of the education system both in the United States and Guyana.
Her dissertation examined the effects of non-cognitive variables on students in a developmental reading program at an urban community college.
Consistent with her area of concentration, Dr. McCallum-Peters has presented papers, both nationally and internationally, on the plight of the students in developmental/basic skills classes.
She collaborated with other CUNY professors to produce a textbook for students in basic reading and writing classes, which was used by several CUNY colleges.
Dr. McCallum-Peters has also published a custom edition of a text for students in basic writing classes at Medgar Evers College.
During the 2007-2008 academic year, she received the MEC Award for Excellence in Teaching.
She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the New York College English Association.
Dr. McCallum-Peters, who is a member of the Brooklyn-based APC (Action, Performance, Commitment) Community Services, said she is currently working on publishing a volume of poetry and a collection of short stories.
