The immigrant community in Queens created their own colorful fireworks in the form of a multicultural presentation at the first July 4th Independence Day Celebration to thank America for what it has done for them and acknowledge their contribution to their new homeland.
Assembly Member of the 29th District William Scarborough and Democratic District Leader, 25th District, Indian Immigrant, Uma Sengupta organized the jubilee. They were joined by Mayoral Candidate John Liu, Congressman, Gregory Meeks, Public Advocate candidate, Reshma Sunjani, Ted Tang and Assembly Member, Ron Kim, who all agree that America is where it is today because of immigrants who live in unity to strengthen the nation.
Despite the 90-degree heat that penetrated the grounds of the Worlds Fair Marina Restaurant on Flushing Bay, the immigrants waved ‘old Glory – the flag of America, danced, cheered and sang in a spectacular jubilee to honor Independence. There was evidence that the expatriates were grateful to be a part of the American dream.
The audience enjoyed dances by Kasi Viswanath from India, Verna Walcott-White Impressions Dance Theater of Guyana, The Bangladeshi Children’s Dance Group, Ramjanee Group, the Valaria Entertainment Group of Brazil, the Local Celebrity Productions Dance Group of Queens, and an Independence song by Suresh, before the Northeastern Pathfinders Drum Corps accompanied a parade, that was followed by the release of white doves into the air, to signify unity.
