Opener Devon Smith, who is eyeing a come back to the West Indies team, has emerged as the leading scorer in the just concluded Regional Super50 Tournament.
Smith finished the tournament on 348 runs after Windward Islands defeated Combined Campuses and College (CCC) by nine wickets in a one-sided rain affected match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados recently.
The former West Indies opening batsman scored an undefeated 67 in the final to cap a series of high scores that included a century on his way to winning the Sir Vivian Richards Award for the Leading Batsman. The Grenadian left-handed batsman also won the Gus Logie award for best fielder after taking the most catches in the tournament – seven.
Windward Island cricketers took most of the award in the Regional Super 50 tournament, which for the first time, was held alongside the regional four-day competition.
In addition to the team winning the Clive Lloyd champions trophy, Dominican off-spinner Shane Shillingford also captured the Curtley Ambrose Award for the leading bowler with 17 wickets.
Windward Islands defeated defending champions Jamaica by five wickets in a semi-final clash two days before.
Other awards winners were Ramon Reifer of Combined Campuses and College, who won the Collis King Award for Best Allrounder for scoring 159 runs and taking 11 wickets overall, while the Jeffrey Dujon Award for Best Wickets went to Jamaica’s Carlton Baugh who took ll catches and three stumping’s.
Windward Islands ended a 13-year title drought after beating CCC to lift their third regional title.
CCC were bowled out for 174 in the final over of the scheduled 50 overs, after they were sent in with the threat of rain in the air.
Rain interrupted play twice in the day/night match.
