Former United States diplomats who served as ambassadors to Jamaica have galvanized once again to raise funds to benefit the needy living on the island they lived and loved. United by an organization known as American Friends of Jamaica, they are ready for their annual New York fund-raising gala. Set for St. Regis Hotel on Oct. 25, once again patron of honor for the event is Britain’s Prince Charles.
The annual marks AFJ’s flagship event to reach out to patrons and friends who believe in uplifting the island and its neediest.
In addition to fund-raising the black-tie event also celebrates an individual and/or company by bestowing the AFJ International Humanitarian Award and the AFJ International Achievement Award.
Both trophies represent symbols of leadership, service and philanthropy dedicated to Jamaica.
Named the Humming Bird or Doctor Bird trophy this year the honoree is Miguel Fluxa Rossello, executive chairman, Grupo Iberostar. He will be lauded for international philanthropy.
“The American Friends of Jamaica honors individuals and/or companies that have distinguished themselves by demonstrating leadership in their service to Jamaica, in particular through exemplary contributions in the areas of education, healthcare and economic development and strengthening the bonds of friendship between the U.S. and Jamaica.”
With a plea to recruit support, donations and volunteers the AFJ works with a broad coalition of Jamaican organizations and stakeholders to bring about change in the lives of Jamaicans in need. Their claim is that by partnering and contributing to the AFJ; “you have the ability to give an education to those who have none; to provide much needed medical care for young mothers, children at risk, the elderly and infirm; and the physically challenged.”
The night begins with a silent auction and cocktails followed by dinner, live auction, award presentation and entertainment.
