The Class ‘AAA’ 400-meter dash was as tight as can be in the Section Eight Track & Field Championships.

At first the result looked as if Tresean Goodwin of Uniondale High School nosed out the victory, but after review of the race the officials called it a nose finish for Baldwin’s senior Kirk Staine. Down the stretch and coming to the finish line it looked like Goodwin had the faster kick,

Staine’s time of 48.3 just edged Goodwin’s 48.4 in a race that was close and exciting.

After Staine didn’t have his best start, he was determined to get the win in the race. The competitors were all tired and exhausted. The outcome of the race was who wanted the race more.

Goodwin doesn’t hold any records in his four years at Uniondale.. In fact, he is a two sports athlete, as many runners are. He played football in the fall for the school. Besides the 400 meters, he runs the 100 and 200 meters. He worked very hard to have a successful athletic career. But his favorite event is the 400.

One of the big meets that he and his teammates competed in this season was the Penn Relays earlier in this spring season. He was a member of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that placed fifth overall.

The 5’ 9” 19-year-old Goodwin, who wanted to stay close to home for his college days will continue his education and running at Adelphi University. His long range goal is to run in the Olympics. Now Goodwin has to give up football for the Garden City based college does not field a football squad.

Treason comes from a sports family for his father Tracy Goodwin was a runner and soccer player in Antigua in the West Indies.

Staine, who will be headed to Longwood College come September will play basketball, as he dons a hoop uniform for Baldwin during the winter.
