World-renowned master of traditional Japanese instruments, Masayo Ishigure will be featured at a music recital on Sunday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel of the Church, entrance at 91 Claremont Ave. (bet. 120th & 122nd St.), Morningside Heights.
This event is being organized by The Riverside Church as part of its long-running Christ Chapel Chamber Series and to kick-off Women’s History Month.
At this recital Ishigure will be accompanied by an ensemble of her students and during the concert, will demonstrate the koto and jiuta shamisen stringed instruments and talk about the music with the audience.
Ishigure has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum and other venues in the New York City metropolitan area; throughout the United States; in Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, Jamaica and Brazil; and has participated in music festivals in Holland, Germany, France and Thailand.
She recorded music for the soundtrack of the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha” by John Williams in 2005 along with Yitzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma; has been featured on public television; and recorded music used during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Since 1992 she has taught koto and shamisen in the music department of Wesleyan University, Connecticut and recently joined the faculty of Columbia University in 2011.
