Female cricketer to be honored

The stunning accomplishments of former West Indian women’s cricket captain, Stephanie Judith Power, will take center stage on Nov. 3, when she is bestowed honorary membership in Atlantic Cricket Club, during its Awards gala in New York City.

Trinidad-born, Powers who continues to exhibit excellence in her current role as assistant cricket coach of the West Indies Woman’s team, becomes the first woman to ever receive this prestigious honor for continued stellar contribution to the sport of cricket.

A former world-class player, Power excelled in one Test and 34 One-Day Internationals for the West Indies women between 1993 and 2005, including three World Cup stints before being appointed assistant coach to Sherwin Campbell for the squad.

Powers, a certified Level II cricket coach and secondary school teacher, led the West Indies women players in the International Woman’s Cricket Council Trophy against Netherlands, Ireland, Japan, Scotland and Pakistan bringing the team into a runners up position.

She has played an intrinsic role in U.S. cricket development over the past three years, conducting coaching clinics in the New York metropolitan area for women cricketers and coaching sessions across America for cricket coaches seeking their Level 1 certification.

Acknowledging Power’s contribution to cricket, Steve Welcome, president of Atlantis, expressed how honored he was that Powers has accepted “our invitation to become an honorary member of the cricket club – Atlantis” and added, “that more than anything else, we firmly believe that she is deserving of this and many other accolades for her contribution to women’s cricket in the Caribbean and the USA.”
