A fast service ferry from Trinidad and Tobago to the Eastern Caribbean is coming soon. The T&T government has agreed to the establishment of the inter-island service which could offer fares as low as US$10.
This was disclosed by Transport Minister Devant Maharaj while speaking at a recent post-Cabinet press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office in Port of Spain.
The ferry service will be based in Trinidad and Tobago and will have links to countries in the Eastern Caribbean, possibly all the way to Jamaica.
Maharaj said it was agreed that the initiative will be funded through a public/private partnership, with the capital costs coming from the private sector.
He noted that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had spoken about the proposal about the inter-island ferry on July 1 during a CARICOM meeting in St. Kitts.
Her announcement, Maharaj, said was supported by St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Stephenson King and Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo.
The minister said the establishment of this inter-island ferry service will strengthen the integration movement between and among CARICOM countries.
This, he said, will expand the free movement between people and capital under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
