Congratulations are in order for calypsonian Denyse Plummer who was recently awarded Trinidad & Tobago’s third highest national award, The Humming Bird Medal (Gold).
Plummer who was in Brooklyn to perform at Everybody’s Calypso Tent was invited back to the twin islands to accept the award on Aug. 31 decided to remain in N.Y. to entertain fans at the nightly calypso tent.
She had recently performed in England for Queen Elizabeth II and was elated to be honored.
“It is a very humbling thing,” Plummer told The Trinidad Express newspaper.
“In a telephone interview from New York where she has been contracted to perform at six shows during the Labor Day celebrations, Plummer told the Express that she was surprised when she got the news about the award,” the paper published.
“My mother died last year and this is something she would have been so proud of. My father died just three weeks ago. If he had lived three more weeks he would have been here to see it happening to me. It is very emotional.”
During the third annual pre-Labor Day festivities Calypso & Soca Tent, which featured more than 30 talents of the genre, Plummer was toasted by her fans.
On a separate night, King Swallow of Antigua and Barbuda was honored for 50 years in the calypso business.
