Del.icio.us“American Candy: Hot Chocolate!!” is the 18th show for this Brooklyn-based, sketch comedy group. Continuing with a strong thematic structure, the latest offering from American Candy is deliciously centered around the world of Black women.
The season three-opener runs two nights, Sept. 16 and 17 at South Oxford Space 138 South Oxford Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Showtime is 8:00 p.m.
Founder and Creative Director of American Candy Hollie Harper says, “I grew up loving sketch comedy but I never really saw myself reflected. Now, in CANDY, I see myself, my snobby sister, my annoyingly pretty frenemy from high school, my uber-vegan neighbor and her pill-popping cousin and they’re all black.”
Sketch comedy, historically the provenance of young white men, is in for a treat. Hot Chocolate!! is chock full of hilarious Black women who are baked right into American culture. Not to be limited to the solitary and ubiquitous black best friend, there’s a whole gang of black girls weaving their stories with a talented, multicultural cast.
But you certainly don’t need to be a black woman to enjoy the wide variety of sketches, songs, skits and pop culture parodies this show has to offer. With sketches ranging from the seventh installment of the crowd pleasing daytime soap styled “Same As It Ever Was,” which new cast member Lisha McCoy described as a black ‘Arrested Development’ to Shirley Chisholm demanding an audition for the Solid Gold Dancers in “Silver Gold” to the scathing pop culture commentary team of “Kiki and Jane,” American Candy: Hot Chocolate!! leaves no stone unturned.
American Candy has been performing sketch comedy to extremely receptive audiences in Manhattan and Brooklyn since June of 2009. Past themes have included Politics As Usual, The History of Sex, and The Wild, Wild West. With an energetic troupe of talented actors and a strong base of writers and directors, American Candy is fast becoming a comedy institution in New York City.
This show marks the first time American Candy has a special guest: Victor Williams, mostly famously known as Kevin James’ best friend Deacon Palmer on the television show The King of Queens. Mr. Williams, a longtime fan of American Candy jested in the past, “I’d love to be a part of American Candy.” To Hollie Harper, it seemed too good to be true and she took it as a joke...it wasn’t!!
