Jamaican flag to fly high in New Jersey

For the second consecutive year, Jamaica’s black, green and gold flag will fly high over Paterson, N.J., when the local Jamaican community will celebrate their nation’s 49th anniversary of independence with a flag-raising ceremony on the steps of City Hall on Aug. 1 and later, a church service.

Organized by the Jamaica Organization of New Jersey (JON-J), the Jamaica Ex-Police Association and the Jamaican Nurses Association of New Jersey, the two events commemorate Jamaica’s independence from Great Britain.

Audrey P. Marks, ambassador of Jamaica to the United States of America, and the Genieve Brown-Metzger, Consul General of Jamaica in New York are expected to attend.

Paterson’s Mayor Jeffery Jones, members of parliament, members of the city council, and local and state elected officials will also participate in the event. With music and vendors selling authentic Jamaican merchandise, festivities kick-off at 5:00 p.m. at the Paterson City Hall Plaza for the flag-raising.

The annual Independence Prayer and Thanksgiving Service will start at 4:00 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church in Paterson and will feature the Rev. Dr. Adrian McFarlane as guest speaker. The church event will include liturgical dancers and singers and will end with a reception in the fellowship hall. Refreshments will be provided by the area’s Caribbean restaurants.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church invites our communities to help us proudly commemorate Black History Month this Sunday, February 12 at 10A.M. We will specifically celebrate the contribution of people of African descent in the Caribbean to the Lutheran Church, especially in St. Croix, and St. Thomas. The Lutheran Church’s oldest parishes are in the Virgin Islands. The congregation will sing Caribbean Hymns, accompanied by Bill Goffi on piano, and special guest Sterling Sample on steel drums.
