Carrington receives CARICOM Award

Former CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington has been vested with the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC) for outstanding service to the regional integration movement.

Carrington, who is currently Trinidad and Tobago’s Ambassador to CARICOM was conferred with the honor at the opening of the recent CARICOM heads of government conference held at the Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, Basseterre, St. Kitts.

According to the citation, Carrington, the longest serving secretary general, was instrumental in deepening the regional integration process, having overseen the revision of the Treaty of Chaguaramas and the consequent transition of the Community from a Common Market to a Single Market.

A successor to Carrington, who retired at the end of 2010, is still being sought.

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told the media after returning fro the St. Kitts Summit that the heads reviewed the shortlist of candidates recommended by the search committee.

The committee is headed by Barbados Foreign Affairs Minister Maxine McLean.

Persad-Bissesar said the leaders agreed to conduct interviews with the short-listed candidates within two weeks after which they will decide on the appointment of a secretary general.
